As a worldwide organization, Vincentians demonstrate God's love by embracing all works of charity and justice. Through collaboration with other people of goodwill, the Society alleviates need and addresses its systemic causes, making no distinction in those served because Vincentians see the face of Christ in them.
Through personal relationships and service to individuals in need, a network of friends inspired by Gospel values aims to grow in holiness and create a more just world.
Dedicated to the values of its founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a Catholic lay organization inspired by Gospel values. By providing person-to-person assistance to those who are in need and suffering, the Society inspires women and men to grow spiritually.
As a reflection of the whole family of God, the Vincentians have members from every ethnicity and cultural background, as well as every age group and economic status. A Vincentian is a member of a society of charity that is united by its spirit of poverty, humility, and sharing, which is nourished by prayer and reflection, mutual support, and adherence to a basic rule.
When we are trying to alleviate the needs of our neighbors, it is easy to lose sight of our mission. Almost 100 years ago, the then International President-General emphasized that we should always bear in mind what makes SVdP so unique - first and foremost is the spiritual growth of Vincentians. "The Society has two aims: to do a good deal of moral benefit to its members through the practice of charity, and to do some spiritual and temporal service to a few poor families in the name of Jesus Christ." The organization would cease to exist if it failed to combine these two objectives. In the event that it was only concerned with the sanctification of its members by means of pious exercises, there would not be a shortage of Confraternities and Third Orders to fulfill this need. On the other hand, if it were only to seek to alleviate the temporal afflictions of the poor, it would only be another public or private institution devoted to that cause.
